Starters review

Posted : 7 years, 1 month ago on 18 March 2017 05:15 (A review of Starters)

I loved the idea behind this book. An interesting concept that makes for good reading for a novel that features dystopia themes. Although itā€™s not that much different from your usual themes (your usual plague ridden society, with the poor suffering, and the rich being..well rich) it was still worth a read and I rather enjoyed it. The world building and setting is well written and provides a good foundation for reading.

I canā€™t say I really like Callie though. Sure, who wouldnā€™t like to live the life of the Ender with all that luxury but sheā€™s not that likable (and you just have those moments where you shake your head and think to yourself ā€˜really? REALLY? DID YOU JUST DO WHAT I THOUGHT YOU JUST DID?ā€™) and Blake. I really donā€™t know what the appeal is with him. Sure Callie, heā€™s cute and all and heā€™s a lovely treat to look at. Thatā€™s ok right? Because poor Michael is back there at home with your suffering brother wondering where the heck you are. But thatā€™s ok, you can walk all over Michael while you fawn over Blake like a lovesick cow.

I have no patience for that kind of stupidity. Really.

So aside from the characters that donā€™t really appeal to me, I still thought the book was worth the read. Itā€™s a good addition to oneā€™s collection of dystopian fiction. Give it a try. Iā€™ll be reading Enders (sequel to this) for sure just to see where the story ends up. (Also if my prediction ends up being correct..)

Cinder (Lunar Chronicles) review

Posted : 7 years, 2 months ago on 14 February 2017 12:07 (A review of Cinder (Lunar Chronicles))

I am at a loss of words with this book. Where do I start? That itā€™s a fantastic somewhat retelling of Cinderella with a futuristic twist that includes cyborgs, other planetary beings, and a couple that you want together so freaking bad you can feel the sparks fly but when theyā€™re so close they take two steps back and you fall back in your seat in complete frustration...yeah itā€™s that kind of book.

It didnā€™t take me too long to finish this one. Itā€™s very engaging, loved the setting and Cinder as a character. Sheā€™s no Mary Sue, nor a damsel in distress. Sheā€™s just someone who was dedicated to taking care Peony and doing her job. We definitely love main characters like these!

The writing in the book was excellent, the characters are extremely well done enough that their personalities bring out the feelings from the reader. (My God, I hated Adri and Pearl so much I almost was spitting venom whenever they appeared in the novel). I loved Cinder and Kai. The chemistry is there, both of them are extremely likable, and you just KNOW theyā€™re meant to be.

The plot is also well written. A plague is introduced in this novel, with otherworldly beings from the Moon also part of the story line with a ruler that makes all other dictators hang their heads in shame. The plot thickens with your usual villainous Evil Queen but Iā€™m sure sheā€™s got more up her sleeve as the series progresses.

YA lovers will absolutely love this book. Itā€™s such a great read, it wonā€™t take long to finish. Great start to the series, canā€™t wait to read more of this!

Girl of Nightmares (Anna #2) review

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 22 October 2016 10:43 (A review of Girl of Nightmares (Anna #2) )

It is recommended you read Anna Dressed in Blood before you read this one.
(Possible spoilers. Youā€™ve been warned)

I loved loved loved this book!!! I demand another one! (although I believe itā€™s only a duology - for now)

The creepy factor was good and well done throughout the novel. (The forest part..oh my lord that was so well written Iā€™ll be remembering that scene for a while now). This is definitely a book you would read for the fall, itā€™s got perfect atmosphere and mood. Cas as a character pulls the book through and does the book justice.

His relationship was Anna is well done. Itā€™s bittersweet but you know it was bound to happen. As for the other characters, wasnā€™t too crazy about Carmelā€™s actions. What the heck...how she brushed off Thomas just made me so mad I wanted to go in and tell her to smarten up and stop being such a twit.

Another character I enjoyed reading was Jestine. Sheā€™s a female version of Cas and it was nice of both of them trading barbs here and there. Wish we could see more of her (in the future perhaps? One day? Please?)

Overall, great ending, great read. Fighting scenes were also notable. Sad to see this go but who knows I hope to see Cas in the future!

Robopocalypse: A Novel review

Posted : 7 years, 8 months ago on 28 August 2016 08:11 (A review of Robopocalypse: A Novel)

You do recall World War Z right? For those have read it, they would be aware of the format and narrative of the book. Itā€™s set through various points of views from various characters. Some may like this format, some donā€™t. Iā€™m thinking thatā€™s one of the deciding factors as to whether a reader will like this book or not. For me, I donā€™t mind it. It focuses on a small select group of characters so each one would have their own story arc.

The sci fi speak is comprehensive and it doesnā€™t make the book a hard read. In fact the action and different points of view make the pace of the plot fast and an enjoyable read. Thereā€™s plenty of moments where it can be frightening - in a society where we rely more on machines and robots only to have them turn against you and everything runs amok is a scary thought. (The part where Zero Hour happens is an example)

Now letā€™s be fair. Those die hard sci fi readers may or may not like this one. Perhaps itā€™s not sci fi enough, perhaps itā€™s too noobish, so Iā€™m not sure if itā€™s for this type of crowd. Since I stop at the mention of quantum physics, this book is fine for me.

So did I like the book? YES I DID. I love the different points of view, I love the action, and the whole entire thing was an awesome read. I understand how it may not be for everyone but we all have varying tastes. Itā€™s definitely worth a try in my opinion

Thank you Doubleday for giving me a Review Copy!

Handling the Undead review

Posted : 7 years, 10 months ago on 26 June 2016 06:19 (A review of Handling the Undead)

Before you actually dive into this book expecting mad rabid zombies trying to get into your house, while the characters try to survive and scrounge whatever resources they can to make it out into a world turned upside down, youā€™re not going to find it here. Yes it was disappointing. Is it worth a try? Maybe...maybe not.

In this case, besides the fact that the dead have risen. Theyā€™re shells of their former self. Not rabid things weā€™re so used to seeing. They feed and react to the livingā€™s feelings. (For example if you react with disgust, or hatred, theyā€™ll lash out). Seems interesting. Certainly a different approach. Zombie purists out there probably wouldnā€™t give this book a second glance. I like trying out different things (just like food!) as there are times when you do come across a gem. Do I consider this one a gem? Not really.

Although it deals with several issues; such as the loss and acceptance of a loved one, or how far would someone go to protect the love one had for someone who was deceased. So in a sense, itā€™s a book that does make you think (well that mixed with zombies? Sacrilege!) so if you want something for the action fast paced plot, youā€™re not going to find it here. You want something to slowly digest (har!), read on character development and thinking, and for something to think about then maybe, just maybe this is for you.

My view on this book, take it or leave it. I found it all right. Not the best read, certainly but worth a try just to have a book that actually makes you think about what would really happen in scenarios such as this. Would you sacrifice everything? Or curl up and cry on the floor as the world burns? Itā€™s worth to mull over. Those that want something with raging undead at your doorstep, skip this and go to the next one.

Drink, Slay, Love review

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 22 October 2014 03:34 (A review of Drink, Slay, Love)

This was a joy to read! Pearlā€™s such a great character and she made the book entertaining. I loved her wit, it provided for the majority of the comedy parts in the plot. Her sarcasm and her attempt to try and fit into school life was absolutely hilarious.

The vampires in this book are well done as well. Theyā€™re bloodthirsty and ambitious. Just the way I like them! no sparkly ones here! The scheme to get Pearl into high school so she can lure the food to feed her fellow vampires was well done (plus Jadrien is quite the hottie!)

Although the plot was pretty good, there were parts that are predictable and cliched. However because of Pearl and her personality (which pretty much is the highlight of the book) it can be overlooked. You pretty much figure out who the unicorn is, and Pearlā€™s choice on who she decides to be with isnā€™t a bad choice (although, Iā€™d rather prefer the bad guy, he was your stereotypical bad boy, but you couldnā€™t help but fall for him.)

Definitely recommended for YA lovers. Read it for Pearl! sheā€™s one of the best protagonists you would ever find.

Everneath review

Posted : 9 years, 6 months ago on 8 October 2014 03:38 (A review of Everneath)

First, loved the cover of this book. I fell in love with it the moment I saw the cover. As for the story, well, it was good at some parts and then at times it felt like it dragged. Itā€™s an interesting twist on the Hades/Persephone myth, which is also what got me into the book as Iā€™ve taken a liking to these types of plots. So it was an interesting and great read at the start. It wasnā€™t until midway through the book that the plot starts to slow down considerably, and characters start to annoy me at this point.

Take Becks for example. Oh my goodness. Iā€™m surprised I went through reading this book because I was starting to get annoyed at her whiny personality. She got so emo and lamented over her situation. There wasnā€™t much personality to her. She was just, emotional baggage thatā€™s carried all through the story. She doesnā€™t even put much of a fight so I donā€™t see her as a strong character nor as a likable one. Cole and his crew were just as annoying. Sometimes it might just take a punch to the fast to make him stop. But it looks like Becks was too busy immersed in her self pity to do something like that.

Out of the characters, Jack was the only one I really like the most. He was such a sweetheart and for what he did just categorizes him into the best YA boyfriends ever. However despite that, the love and chemistry between Jack and Becks wasnā€™t really there. She was too much of a cardboard character to really make the romance become something substantial.

So it wasnā€™t that bad of a book. The ending was great. Although I have a feeling more whininess is going to come from Becks in the second one. Nevertheless itā€™s worth the read for YA lovers.

Born Wicked: The Cahill Witch Chronicles, Book One review

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 1 October 2014 02:47 (A review of Born Wicked: The Cahill Witch Chronicles, Book One)

Oh wow I loved this book. The three sisters were such memorable characters and each had their own distinct personality. Of the three Iā€™d have to love Maura because of her outspoken personality, her temperament made her explosive and exciting to read about. I felt sorry for her at the same time because of what she goes through, but Iā€™d have to say sheā€™s my favorite character of the three.

The plot of the book was really good and interesting. World building was wonderful and I loved the setting. The pace of the plot was also steady and filled with mystery. I liked the concept of the Brotherhood and the Sisterhood, itā€™s interesting and different. The prophecy mentioned in this book was a little drawn out too much as I hoped, but perhaps thatā€™s because I was eager to figure out what it was.

I canā€™t say that I really like Cate. Sheā€™s a typical older sister but I found myself yelling every few 50 pages: ā€˜CATE. FFS. TELL YOUR SISTERSā€™. Itā€™s her keeping all the information away from her sisters that makes the plot even more entangled than before (but more exciting!). Of the two possible romances, Iā€™d prefer Paul, only because he just sounds much more romantic (but a bit of a cad) than Finn.

Naturally with books like these, it leaves on a HUGE CLIFFHANGER that makes you want to pull your hair out because youā€™d have to wait a long time for the next book to come out. Iā€™m telling you, itā€™s an ending thatā€™s enough to make you want to scream.

Iā€™d say, fans of A Great and Terrible Beauty, and Prophecy of the Sisters would enjoy this book. Similar setting, but very different plots. Overall fabulous reading and most definitely recommended!

Crocodile on the Sandbank (Amelia Peabody, Book 1) review

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 24 September 2014 03:34 (A review of Crocodile on the Sandbank (Amelia Peabody, Book 1))

This book went off to a bit of a slow start, but it was a nice introduction to Amelia and how she came to be. I enjoy her character, she stands out in Victorian society, sheā€™s strong willed and fiercely independent. Evelyn comes along later in the plot and sheā€™s the complete opposite. Yet the two are fast friends and compliment each other. When the Emerson brothers are introduced, one can already come to conclusions as to who goes out with who. They make cute couples, although Amelia and her love interest was the best of the two couples (love their bantering)

The plot itself is a really nice mixture of historical fiction and mystery. Thereā€™s elements of thriller/horror in the plot itself so as it progresses. The mystery doesnā€™t really start until at least a third way into the story. There is a supernatural element into the story as well, but of course, being a historical mystery, thereā€™s a logical explanation to it all.

The only few criticisms I have of this story is the slow pace of it, character development is fine and fills the plot in between, but itā€™s not until you read further into the book does the mystery intensify and become more thrilling.

Still, itā€™s worth a read. Historical mystery lovers will enjoy the start of what looks like a great series. Iā€™ll be looking for the second one to read as well.

Amped review

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 17 September 2014 03:18 (A review of Amped)

This book grabbed me from the first page and Iā€™m thinking Daniel H Wilson is quickly becoming my favorite new author. I loved reading this from cover to cover.

Itā€™s certainly an interesting concept, where we can become ā€˜amplifiedā€™ to enhance ourselves but then youā€™d have to ask yourselves where the line is crossed and when itā€™s too much? when does it become out of hand to the point where those with ā€˜ampsā€™ are then ostracized and become second class citizens. These are all the things to look at while reading this book.

What makes it so good is the action that begins right in the beginning of the book, and all throughout the book which engages the reader and makes the book a non stop read. Itā€™s pretty much fast paced, although through the middle of the book it does slow down but only to give Owen a bit more character development.

As for Owen as a character, I had to admit Iā€™m still not that crazy about him. Heā€™s a bit of a twit. Sure, he looks at the world sometimes through a rose colored lens but youā€™d have to wonder when reality is going to hit him and when heā€™s going to react. Itā€™s not until heā€™s actually FORCED with his back to the wall type of scenario to finally act. He does seem to be a bit blind to whatā€™s going on around him and his fellow Amps.

The villains in this book are very well done. Theyā€™re awesome bad guys (Lyle moreso. Vaughnā€™s just a jerk). Theyā€™re so bad youā€™re not sure if you want to hate them (like Vaughn) or like them because they do such a good job at being bad (like Lyle). Overall the characters in the book are pretty well written. The only one character I wasnā€™t too keen on was Lucy, because I thought she was just there to play a romantic love interest and that was it. She didnā€™t really contribute much for this book in my opinion.

The writing style is good. Nothing fancy or so wordy when it comes to the ā€˜high techā€™ part that youā€™ll be left looking through wikipedia on some of the terminology and all you get are metaphysical answers. Thankfully this book has none of that so even if youā€™re not much of a sci fi fan, you should give this book a try. The action packed writing should be enough to get you going!

Iā€™m definitely going to put Daniel H Wilson on my authors to watch for list. I really liked his style of writing so Iā€™ll be looking for more works by him. Definitely recommended for those that want an action packed read. Sci fi readers might enjoy this also (even those who donā€™t care much for high tech speak!)
